JoyceDeWitt started performing on stage at the age of 13. DeWitt was a graduate of Ball State University with a Bachelor's of Arts. The director advised her to apply for UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. In the program, she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt has claimed that she didn't meet actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She worked as an assistant secretary while at UCLA. DeWitt's character as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-84 series is among her most well-known. She was chosen to play the show's pilot and got the job. She also portrayed Janet in an episode in 1979 of the spinoff series The Ropers. DeWitt was the last actor to be featured in the series' 1984 finale. Then, she appeared in an episode on Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. After that, she stopped acting for several years. Her acting resume included an appearance in an episode of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse in June 1991. The actress later appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! A character based upon her, voiced by an actress, was featured in a 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain. She was featured in an episode of Cybill and also made an appearance on Living Single's final episode. Her work in the 2000s include television shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
